Minutes of 11/10/08 Meeting at Hardesty Multi-Service Center

Program: Successful Neighborhood Intervention Projects Utilizing a Community Policing Presenter: Captain David Neri, Commander, TPD's Midtown Division Approach

Participants present: 16

Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m.

A PowerPoint presentation followed featuring:

1.      Overview of Sam Hughes Neighborhood (SHN) crime stats May-October, showing peak in September

2.      Comparison of SHN crime stats in relation to other midtown neighborhoods

3.      Weekly crime maps showing SHN burglaries (stats are reviewed every 7 days)

4.      Identification/apprehension of 2 major offenders, significantly reducing incidents

5.      Suggestions what neighborhood can do: 1) be visible; 2) issue visitor passes; 3) create resident auto stickers

6.      SHN area issues: something to steal; open doors/unsecured items; high volume pedestrian traffic (bike/bus routes)

A discussion followed about successful neighborhood intervention projects (Midvale Park, Oak Flower/Dodge Flower) utilizing a community policing approach, with emphasis on:

1.      Getting organized

2.      Creating strategic plan

3.      Identifying causal factors

4.      Involving neighborhood businesses, schools, faiths, government

5.      Setting shared goals

6.      Getting neighbors involved

7.      Where do we connect TPD & SHN?

Issues of concern were:

1.      Smash & Grab incidents after dark

  1. Report to Listserve
  2. Help enforce bike laws (lights, mirrors, etc.)
  3. Go door to door with cautionary info

2.      Graffiti abatement

  1. City reducing assistance
  2. Have paint available for immediate cover-up

3.      Speeding in SHN

  1. Contact Capt. Tom McNally, 791-4467, radar detector, or Mary Kay Slater

4.      Debbie Stertz needs volunteers to assist and serve on committees (Public Relations, Crime Statistics, Legislative, Neighborhood Watch)

5.      Suggestion - Organize Listserve as a committee format
