April 15, 2008, Himmel Park Library Meeting Room

Present: Leon Bear, Janett Carbajal, Carolyn Classen, Doug Donahue, Sylvia Mungaray, John O’Dowd, Larry Roberts, Frank Soltys, Ed Stokes, John Wilder.

Excused: Wallis Downer, Michael Guymon, Kathi McLaughlin, Gail Schuessler.

Guests: Don Gibson and Wilson Hughes, City of Tucson Environmental Services; Danny Pickrom, UAPD; Kate McMillan, Alex Soloway, Rick Bell.

Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m.

Approval of 3/18/08 Minutes: MSP approving.

Announcements: Blenman-Elm hazardous waste collection 4/19/08, 8-12, at Ward 6 Council office.

Call to Audience:

1. Gibson and Hughes announced a recycling center, to be placed west of the library, will be dedicated 4/22/08. After 5 years of the program, 200,000 tons were processed, City received over $5 million. For more info visit tucsonrecycles.org, recycling info 791-5000, customer service 791-3171.

2. Pickrom indicated UAPD working in conjunction with TPD (red tagging under TPD jurisdiction) on crime issues. Campus statistics are low, current primary issues are vehicles stolen from garages, speeding.

Reports of Officers:

President (O'Dowd): Attended a neighborhood meeting where the minidorm problem (acquiring properties to build student rentals) was discussed. Recommendations were made that an attorney be contacted for a legal opinion on this issue.

Vice President (Soltys):

Monitoring Starwood (1900 E. Speedway) development; meeting with officials of the City Development Services and Dept. of Transportation have and will be scheduled.

Four-neighborhood survey, asking residents for suggestions about the park, library and adaptive use of the water tower to go out in the next two weeks.

Standing Committee Reports:

Seniors Care Program (Classen): 1) Trudy Mills has volunteered to be acting coordinator over the summer.

MCRC (Classen): The next meeting scheduled on 4/16/08, 6 p.m. at the Randolph Golf Course copper room. 3 subcommittees (operations, communications, land use) have been formed.

Land Use/NPZ (covered in President's report above).

Schools (Stokes/O'Dowd): SH School losing students, only 38 enrolled in 5th grade, counselor and librarian will be half-time, office manager position eliminated. Tucson H.S. embroiled with numerous problems.

Elderly Housing/Mackey Development (Roberts): Casitas on Broadway held board meeting re green certification; going back to HUD for final funding approval; ground breaking in October. Still attempting to get the City to realign Broadway corridor.

CCRC (Soltys): Distributed info re the Lunar & Planetary Laboratory invitation to attend celebration for the Phoenix Mars Lander on 5/25/08, 3-7 pm. For more info visit http://nmars.arizona.edu.
